Recently, especially since the pandemic of COVID-19, airlines and accommodation providers have been abusing their position and have started overbooking all possible flights and accommodations. Overbooking is defined as the overselling of seats or the selling of rooms in hotels in excess of those available. Lately, we have seen an increase of overselling flight tickets and accommodation. Airlines are overbooking in order to sell more seats than there are actual seats on the plane. Their statistics show that it is cheaper to put a passenger who has bought a ticket without a seat on another flight at a later date than to risk a vacancy on the plane or in the hotel. The main reason for overbooking is therefore to optimize their profits. In the world of aviation and the hotel industry, every empty seat on the plane or empty room is a direct loss for them. Long-standing statistics show that a certain percentage of customers never show up for a commercial flight or hotel. The result is overbooking – an economic practice with ethical implications. Thus, airlines sell between 2 and 10% more tickets than there are seats on the plane. This, of course, ensures that the plane is as full as possible.

OVERBOOKING FRUSTRATION: Overbooking can easily occur and you may find that all your plans will be wrecked and you’ll start your trip in a bad mood. EU PASSENGER LEGAL RIGHTS: In the European Union, consumers are protected from overbooking by Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, which sets out their rights in the event of denied boarding. The amount of compensation depends on the length of the flight and can be:

        • 250 EUR for flight up to 1500 km,
        • 400 EUR for intra-EU flight over 1500 km or for other flights between 1500 and 3500 km,
        • 600 EUR for flights over 3500 km outside the EU.

In addition, passengers are entitled to alternative flights, meals, telephone calls and accommodation if necessary.

The questions arises whether the actions of airlines and hoteliers in relation to overbooking are moral. Our answer is NO, it is not right for them to overbook. That is why we make sure to protect our customers from overbooking.

OVERBOOKING AND HOW TO AVOID PROBLEMS: To avoid problems and worries about overbooking, we recommend booking your seats to guarantee your place on the plane. Seat reservations are made at an additional cost and prices vary depending on the seat and class. Although we sometimes feel like it is a waste to pay a few extra euros to reserve a seat since the flights are already quite expensive in the high season, that little amount can save you a lot of problems when it comes to overbooking.

FLIGHT CHANGES

Anyone who travels often knows that unforeseen circumstances sometimes make it necessary to change travel dates. Please note that not every ticket type allows date changes or other changes (e. g. adding luggage, etc.). The cheapest tickets do not guarantee a seat reservation and they also do not allow date changes, so if you are travelling on business, we really recommend that you do not go for the very basic, cheapest ticket, as we will not be able to change your departure or arrival date in case of any changes to meetings, trade fair, conferences.

Some examples from our experience: Two different companies we work with went to the same trade fair abroad. One company listened to us and bought extra seats on the plane for their employees, while other company, despite warnings, wanted to save a little money and didn’t take the seat reservation. They decided not to listen, despite the warnings for overbooking. Of course, we got a call when they were at the airport as 3 out of 5 passengers were put on the next day’s flight. Considering they missed one day of the fair; they got angry and at the same time realized that we are here to help and give advice to help our clients. These clients decided that from then on, they would always buy seats and listen to our advice. Our clients, three gentlemen, were going to Germany on a business trip, and they decided to buy the cheapest flight ticket before their trip. The price of the ticket did not include seat reservations, sou our clients wondered until the last minute whether they would even be able to get on the flight. As they were in a hurry to get to Germany to all the meetings, they called us in concern and asked what we could do in this case. But because the ticket was the cheapest one and did not include seat reservations, we could not help in this situation. Fortunately, they ended up just getting on the plane, but if this situation had not ended so well, we would have had to buy new tickets for our clients, as it was not possible to change the dates for their basic tickets. You might find the advice on seat reservation and date change useful on your travels too!
